Seeking a unique adventure as well as employment How would you like to be one of the few people on the planet to have the opportunity to live and work in Antarctica Raytheon Polar Services is the primary contractor for the National Science Foundations (NSF) U.S. Antarctic Program. We are currently looking for a Shop Foreman Vehicle Maintenance Facility to deploy to the McMurdo or South Pole Antarctic research station on a contract basis beginning approximately October 2009.
There are three contract lengths: Summer - (Approximately) October through February, Winter - (Approximately) February through October, or Year-Long - (Approximately) October through October. We are looking for Primary and Alternate employees to fill all contract positions. The Primary is first in line for the position. The Alternate is next in line to deploy should the Primary be unable to meet deployment requirements.
Responsibilities:
The Shop Foreman Vehicle Maintenance Facility is responsible for directing the maintenance and repair of Antarctic equipment. Functions as recognized technical expert in the field of Antarctic equipment maintenance and repair. Must be comfortable with the most complex repairs on a broad range of equipment in the shop or field.
Responsible for corrective maintenance accomplishment as outlined by Program management.
Directs the work of all skilled workers, administrators and helpers engaged in the repair and upkeep of assigned mobile and stationary equipment, associated tooling and materials, and supporting parts stock. Ensures work request priorities are complete adjusts tasking as mission requires to meet urgent needs. Coordinates work requirements and assigns personnel to specific tasks.
Executes or monitors all in-progress work to ensure quality, timely completion and control of material. Delegates assigned tasks and performs inspections of all work in progress on a daily basis.
Documents work order progress and communicates issues that arise with customers and management. Maintains records of shop activities, on both individual work orders and permanent technical documentation. Prepares and submits reports on the progress of all new work projects, and individuals assigned.
Responsible for the safety and accountability of the crew assigned, to include maintaining a safe workplace program and ensuring that safety is the highest priority in the workplace.
Responsible for the training and development of the crew assigned, to include a healthy safety culture and an environment of technical competence and professional execution of a world-class maintenance program.
Required Qualifications:
High school graduate or equivalent. A valid drivers license is required. Minimum of ten years experience in machinery trades, including small engine, automotive or heavy equipment maintenance and repair, or relevant mechanical experience is required. Requires knowledge of sound mechanical practices applying to commercial and special purpose equipment, using chemicals and tools, methods of handling heavy mechanisms, internal combustion engines and electrical, pneumatic, and hydraulic systems.
Preferred Skills:
Two years training at a technical school is highly desirable. Manufacturers courses, safety training, and process classes all favorably considered. Supervisory or leadership experience is strongly preferred.

All contract positions include competitive salary and a comprehensive benefits package. For the time you are in Antarctica compensation also includes travel to and from the ice, room & board, and you are eligible for a performance-based bonus upon successful completion of your contract.
